The Avengers… what more can be said about it? The greatest movie in modern times pretty much sums it up. It has single handedly smashed almost every movie record in history. At over $1 billion worldwide, the film is already Disney’s highest-grossing release of all time. But where does that leave other “summer” movies? Eating its dust, that’s where. Since I saw the Avengers, I’ve gone on to see Battleship, Project X and Dark Shadows. And suffice to say, none has managed to impress me, I just kept thinking, ‘why am I not watching the Avengers again?’, because I have to write reviews that’s why! I’m sure if I had seen Battleship before the Avengers I would have enjoyed it and not dozed off half the time, but alas…  (more…)

With Marvel’s The Avengers receiving all the praise and attention, its easy to forget that there are a number of potential summer blockbusters involving other much loved heroes and hero team-ups, coming out at around the same time. Rian Johnson’s new movie Looper, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a time-travelling assassin who works for the mob. Things get hairy when the mob decide to terminate him by giving him one last job, his future self (Bruce Willis), JGL is essentially asked to whack himself.  (more…)

The first Sin City from Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez (and Quentin Tarantino) starring Jessica Alba, Devon Aoki, Alexis Bledel, Poweres Boothe, Rosario Dawson and Bruce Willis was such a breath of fresh air. There was just something about it that I couldn’t get enough of, thats why it was so frustrating when it seemed like rumours of a sequel were just that, rumours. But now, seven years later, a press release by the Weinstein Company has confirmed that a Sin City sequel is finally going to begin production.  (more…)
